Importance of a Scotch Whisky Glass
by
Allan Michael Taylor
Perhaps there are no other drinks in the planet that can be more geographically identified than Scotch whisky. What is interesting to point out is that despite of the secrecies and myths surrounding the drink, the best whiskies ever made are those that had been prepared with the simplest way possible: the single malts.
The term is derived from the Gaelic usquebaugh which roughly translates to water of life. Books on researches and studies about whisky can make gigantic libraries. Epicurean experts never stop from digging facts and traveling around Scotland to pursue further development of the drink. But these efforts actually cover the very clear process of making a whisky, and that is fetching a barrel of water, malting some barley, sending them to fermentation and distillation, waiting for a few months, and voila, there goes your own version of a whisky.
But just like any other endeavor, whisky production is both an art and a science, requiring intricate and informed procedures to create the finest finished products as possible. Getting some grains are easy, but getting the perfect grains requires a lot of time and skills. Anyone can follow the procedures written in a recipe book, but not everyone can do it like an expert and give it a craftsman-like approach.
There’s actually no consensus in terms of drinking whisky, but if you really want to celebrate the workmanship of its production, you have to learn how to judge the spirit the way the Scots do. First thing you need to be concerned about is choosing the Scotch whisky glass.
As long as custom is concerned, the convenient way of drinking whisky is by using a lowball glass. In fact, whisky on the rocks became so popular that people get used to referring lowball, tumbler kind of glass as a whisky glass. In terms of appreciating whisky however, this is so wrong. Using such is actually a crime. Just like a carbonated drink that easily loses its spirit once opened, whisky when put in a fat, wide-mouthed glass will also immediately lose its power and fragrance. As mentioned, the drink only contains water and malted barley, but the craft that has been put in it is the one that makes it expensive. If the aroma and essence are disregarded in consuming the drink, the hard work of the distiller is also ignored.
In order to enjoy the spirit, a specially-crafted Scotch whisky glass should be used. This glass looks like a magnified and shortened version of a champagne flute. The stem is less than an inch high and rendered with a larger diameter. The mouth is moderately wide, its size in the middle range between a tumbler and a flute. The bowl is around three to four inches high, just enough to keep the aroma in. Lastly, the material is made of strong and clear glass crystal, faithful in showing the true color of the liquid.
A Scotch whisky glass can spell the difference between a good and a poor evaluation of the drink. To avoid bias in favor or against a certain whisky brand or version, use a constant glass during wine tasting.
